Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana with seven charter members - Mary Lou Allison (Gardner), Bessie Downey Rhoades Martin, Cubena McClure, Vivian White Marbury, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson and Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford. These women were trailblazers, creating a community service sisterhood in the midst of the racial adversity that was all too common during that era. Sigma Gamma Rho bears the distinction of being the only NPHC sorority not founded at Howard University.

Hundreds of undergraduate and alumnae chapters have since been established throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. gives leadership, service and resources toward removing barriers and inequalities so that all peoples of America may develop their potential and exercise full citizenship through support of human rights legislation, service to and support of grassroots efforts.
